Future Improvements in the Technique

• New Flicker tools- could be extended to include:
  1. spot/band measurement and quantitation (manual and automatic)
  2. automatic alignment of spots between gels
  3. integration of putative identification with existing Internet databases (eg. SWISS-PROT)
  4. use other information in federated 2D gel databases

• May be useful technique for other domains :
  1. gel electrophoresis (both 1-D and 2-D for protein, RNA and DNA materials)
  2. chromatographs
  3. serial section images produced by various microtome methods
  4. medical X-rays for comparing bone growth or tumor progression
  5. MRI or PET images
  6. astronomical star maps
  7. spectra (of anything)
  8. graphs (of anything)
  9. problem domains which produce mis-aligned or distorted images
  10. problem domains which lose alignment during data acquisition
  11. groupware consultations on the same set of images
