"On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like
to extend a warm invitation for all scientists interested in
electrophoresis and the application of electrophoretic techniques to
modern medicine. The Electrophoresis Society's annual meeting will be
held at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD on August
9-10, 1999, with a welcoming reception on Sunday evening, August
8th. The theme of the conference is "Electrophoresis in
Medicine", which will highlight the very exciting work being done
in this area at the present time. The NIH location was selected
because it is the National Center of the Intramural Medical Research
Program."
A plenary lecture will be given at the start
of each day (8:50am) and the remainder of each day (until 5pm) will
consist of short verbal and poster presentations on the meeting themes
and other topics of current interest.
Featured Topics
Call for Abstracts
Abstracts of papers describing any aspect of theoretical or applied electrophoresis, especially on the meeting theme, are invited. Papers for oral presentation will be selected from the submitted abstracts. Abstracts to be considered for oral presentation must be submitted by MAY 1, 1999. After May 1 abstracts will be considered for poster presentation. Poster will be displayed throughout the meeting. Poster presenters may request short (two minute/two overheads) presentations before lunch to advertise why the attendees should visit their posters. The final program will be announced JUNE 1, but space will be made for truly important and late-breaking topics. Awards will be made for the best three speakers and posters, as judged by a committee of students and Society members. E-mail your abstract as an attached file (<250 words) or pasted text to ccdsexec@msn.com. Please include instructions as to how you prefer to present your abstract, either as an oral presentation or poster presentation and include your full mailing address, telephone and FAX numbers. Email is preferred, but faxes can be sent to 925 283 5621. If electronic submission is not possible, please mail your abstract with a diskette to the Electrophoresis Society, 3338 Carlyle Terrace, Lafayette, CA 94549.
Conference Proceedings
The Proceedings of the meeting will be published in a special issue of the peer-reviewed journal Electrophoresis. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we strongly encourage all authors of accepted abstracts to submit a manuscript to the Executive Director, Joan Stevenson who will be receiving manuscripts at the meeting on behalf of WILEY VCH for submission to the Proceedings issue. Members of the Electrophoresis Society that subscribe to the journal at the discounted member rate will receive a copy of the Proceedings issue directly from the publisher. Non subscribers who wish to obtain a copy of the proceedings can do so at a cost of $15.00 US for meeting attendees.
Industry Product Display
An industry Product Display will also be held each day, which will include complimentary lunches. For more information on how to participate in the tabletop exhibit or other sponsorship opportunities, please contact Joan Stevenson in the Society office.
Social Program
There will be a Welcome Reception on Sunday evening. The meeting banquet will be held on Monday evening and will feature Shirley Corriher, who will talk about "The Secret Life of Food". This topic introduces the theme of our year 2000 meeting "Electrophoresis in Human Nutrition". Shirley (a self-confessed stand-up comedienne) was a chemist and writes and speaks about many biological and chemical issues in food. She wrote the book CookWise (copies of which she will gladly sell and sign for those at the dinner) and contributes to every issue of Fine Cooking.
Student Registration Waivers
Students may apply for free registration in return for services provided at the meeting, including introduction of speakers, judging posters and talks in collaboration with Society members and miscellaneous support services.
Accommodations & Other Attractions
A comprehensive guide to hotels in all price ranges in Bethesda and nearby suburbs -- all completely searchable – is available on the Washington Web site at www.washington.org . We suggest you come out early and take advantage of DC's great weekend rates! The NIH itself has many Laboratories which people may wish to visit. The NIH Web-site can help attendees plan such visits: www.nih.gov. The National Library of Medicine is on the campus. Our nation's Capital is readily accessible by Metro, with attractions such as the monuments, the White House, the Smithsonian, the Holocaust Museum and the internationally known area known as Dupont Circle with its eclectic array of fine art galleries. Summer is a great time to take a boat trip on the Potomac or a tow-boat ride on the Chesapeake and Ohio canal (which starts in Georgetown).
For program updates on registration please browse the Society Web site at http://www-lecb.ncifcrf.gov/ESAB/. Second notices with additional meeting information will be sent to Electrophoresis Society members and all pre-registrants in early 1999 and posted on the Web site as details become available or contact Joan Stevenson (Ph:925-284-7186, Fax:925-283-5621, E-mail:ccdsexec@email.msn.com)..
